30k Mile: Change Engine Oil Filter

Change Engine Oil Filter. You should normally do this only when you are also changing the engine oil. See that step for prep instructions.

Tools needed:

Porsche special tool 9204 (similar tools are available from most auto parts stores) I think I paid about $12 for the Porsche one.
27mm hex socket - note that many sets exclude a 27mm for some reason. I had to buy one separate from my set.
Torque wrench capable of measuring 18 ft-lb

Parts needed:

996-107-225-52 Oil Filter, should come with a new o-ring Mine have been priced between $14.92 and $12.90

Procedure:

Place drip pan under the oil filter. You can generally do this at the same time that you're draining the oil sump.

Put the tool on the filter housing, and remove the filter using the 27mm socket.

Whenever I've done this, the tool tends to bind onto the filter housing after the filter housing is removed. You need to persuade it to come off the tool by tapping it on the side, somewhat energetically. Or just leave it on until the housing is reinstalled on the engine.

Once you've removed the housing, pour the contents into your drip pan and pull the filter element out of the housing.

Wipe out the housing of any oil and debris. Change the o-ring, and put a thin film of oil on the the o-ring. The workshop manual doesn't say to do this, but it is common practice and I do it anyway.

Insert a new filter element into the housing and be sure it is seated fully.

Examine where the oil filter attaches to the engine. Clean off any oil or debris with a soft rag.

Screw the filter housing with filter and o-ring installed onto the engine.

Using the special filter removal tool and the torque wrench, torque the filter to 18 ft-lb.
